Google Revamps its SEO Starter Guide: Here’s What’s New by @MattGSouthern

Google Revamps its SEO Starter Guide: Here’s What’s New by @MattGSouthern http://ift.tt/2CbhIZN Google has revamped its official SEO Starter Guide for the first time in over 7 years. With the release of a new , web-based starter guide Google is removing the old PDF starter guide, as well as depreciating the Webmaster Academy which had overlapping content. Google’s new SEO Starter Guide builds off both of the previously available resources. The revamped guide also includes new sections emphasizing the need for search engine optimization, how to add structured data markup, and tips for  mobile-friendly websites. Google recommends its starter guide to anyone who owns, manages, monetizes, or promotes online content via Google Search. However, as a reader of Search Engine Journal, I think it’s fair to assume you’re already more familiar with SEO than the average site owner. Google’s revamped guide does not pull back the curtain and reveal any previously unknown secrets of how its

Wake up! Social Media Organic Engagement is Long Dead

Image
I'm in disbelief that I hear marketers still prioritise social engagement. Immediate Future's  survey  found social engagement as first choice KPI, and Mary Meeker's internet trends report found 56% picked engagement for social advertising success. Beware if your marketing person or agency is still talking about organic engagement on social media platforms as a primary success factor. It may be time to re-think your relationship with them. There are two complimenting arguments: 1) Organic engagement doesn't exist anymore. You have to pay to play.  Organic reach on the core channels of Facebook, Twitter, and even Instagram are virtually nil. And y ou are not going to win the viral lottery. You need to allocate significant investment and paid media to drive video view counts, or to reach your target audience.  Also organic engagement seems like a good ideas to measure creative success. R esearch (Facebook, Millward Brown & Nielsen) shows that likes, shar

No CEO needed: These blockchain platforms will let ‘the crowd’ run startups

No CEO needed: These blockchain platforms will let ‘the crowd’ run startups http://ift.tt/2icIAzK Back in May, I wrote about the concept of DAOs , decentralized autonomous organizations capable of running themselves thanks to blockchain technology — no CEO or C-Suite needed. At the time I was writing, there were a few people in the blockchain community testing out the idea but no strong efforts underway. That was six months ago. As anyone in the crypto space will tell you, six months is a really long time. Today, a market for DAO platforms is emerging, complete with teams, funding, development, and initial implementations. This is a category worth paying close attention to because it represents the much larger, more powerful shift that blockchains enable. The Bitcoin and alt-coin bull market are fun to watch, but it’s the new business models — and even societal models — that crypto enables that will be the real disruption. DAOs solve some pretty interesting problems. In today

11 LinkedIn Features You Aren’t Using (But Should Be)

Image
11 LinkedIn Features You Aren’t Using (But Should Be) http://ift.tt/2iNF0wK With hundreds of millions of users, there’s no doubt that LinkedIn is still the world’s largest professional-oriented platform. That being said, in recent years, lots of users have drifted away from the network. They rarely log in and barely engage with the content and connections found over there. I was exactly the same, checking my LinkedIn account a handful times each year, max. There was never anything of interest. But since LinkedIn’s fairly recent design overhaul, I took another look at what the now Microsoft-owned platform offers. And truth be told, I was pretty surprised to find a number useful features and tricks, some of which were very well hidden. Taken together, these can help make LinkedIn a tool for far more than just job-hunting 5 Apps and Tools to Organize Your Job Search 5 Apps and Tools to Organize Your Job Search Every good job search needs a system. Will E-Commerce Benefit from Machine Learning or Face a New Threat?

Image
Will E-Commerce Benefit from Machine Learning or Face a New Threat? http://ift.tt/2BlxWPr The e-commerce revolution was built on the back of digital advances and automation, but is the next generation of machine learning and AI friend or foe? Machine learning is the method today’s systems use to learn about you and the fundamental things that make you who you are. It looks beyond generalizations and characterizations on your age or gender and realizes that you’re a huge fan of cartoon dogs and emojis, but only the ones that have the same hair as you. In the e-commerce space, machine learning is being used to slowly learn what customers prefer and how they want to see information to get them to make a purchase. It tests and adapts, using new options and information to slowly refine the best way to reach your customers. It’s an amazing tool with plenty of opportunities, but hiding within that potential are some risks if you’re not paying attention. Let’s look at what can help or h

7 Good Tools for Surveying Your Audience

7 Good Tools for Surveying Your Audience http://ift.tt/2jPeRB7 Games like those you can make on Kahoot and Socrative are great for review activities. However, you don't always need to play a full game to gauge your students' understanding of a topic. And other times you just need a quick way to anonymously survey your class. Here are some tools that you can use to poll your students or any other audience. PingPong is a free online polling system that lets you collect feedback in the form of multiple choice, text, or image-based responses. In the short video embedded below I demonstrate the teacher and student views of the free PingPong response system. Acquainted is a free tool for conducting online polls. Unlike other online polling tools, Acquainted is a conversational polling tool. What that means is that people who take your poll can get an instant response from your regarding their selections of poll options. Your responses are written into Acquainted and progr
